The seventh board of directors of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) held its 5th executive council meeting in Beijing on April 25. Wang Jiarui, chairman of CSCLF, presided over the meeting and delivered a speech. Zheng Jianbang, vice-chairman of CSCLF and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Hang Yuanxiang, executive vice-chairman of CSCLF, gave a report on CSCLF delegations' visits to Japan and South Korea. The meeting also reviewed and approved Vice-Chairman Jing Dunquan's report on the management of CSCLF in 2017, and held discussions on work regarding teenagers' development.

Wang Jiarui stressed that CSCLF aims to promote teenagers' development and contribute to the future of the nation. The new era has made new demands on our work, he said. We should push forward Soong Ching Ling's idea of providing the best for children, raise awareness of innovation and catch up with development trends.
"We should focus on problems in teenagers' development and carry out in-depth research, which will lay the scientific basis for our future work. We should stick to the concept of peace, unification and the future, and fully make use of our advantages to establish branded activities according to teenagers' needs and interests. We should strengthen the force of our work in education, health and culture, and contribute to poverty alleviation. We should make sure children from poor families, especially left-behind children and those with physical disabilities feel that they are cared about by the Party, government and society. We should continue to improve our work regarding after-school education, fully utilize the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling and Soong Ching Ling Science and Culture Center for Young People as national education bases, to promote the all-round development of children and teenagers, contributing to cultivating successors to the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics," He added.
Zheng Jianbang pointed out that the foundation should perform its duties entrusted to it by the central government to create a good environment for the all-round development of teenagers. He said that the foundation should organize a variety of training sessions to benefit teenagers' mental and physical health, and at the same time, think, study and solve current problems in the ideological education of teenagers. We should carry out ideological education and cultivate children's patriotism in ways that they are willing to accept. We should put emphasis on teaching history, allowing teenagers to learn the difficulties in revolution, construction, reform and development, making them cherish today's happy life and cultivating their national pride and confidence.
During the conference, a discussion was held on how to better promote teenagers' development. Yang Nianlu, Yu Huarong, Rong Lei and other experts and board members shared their views.
Yang Nianlu, executive vice-president of the Chinese Society of Education, suggested that CSCLF should follow the national development strategy and contribute to the improvement of family education and promote children's ability to innovate.
Yu Huarong, Secretary of the Party Committee of China Association of Inventions (CAI), stressed that a child's teenage years are crucial for innovative development. CSCLF cooperated with CAI to establish a Soong Ching Ling Inventions Award for Teenagers and Children in 2001, with the aim of cultivating an innovative spirit and improving practical abilities among primary and secondary school students. He expressed his hopes that the foundation can learn more experience from counterparts at home and abroad to diversify the range of activities.
Rong Lei, a senior official from the Ministry of Education, suggested that the foundation should carry out projects focusing on teenagers' development by using scientific methods, and help them to develop appropriate values and morals.
Zhao Danni, vice-chairwoman of the China Welfare Institute, said that the foundation should carry out research into the behavior of teenagers in the age of information, and put more emphasis on key problems in teenagers' development, such as autism.
Zhang Xiaomin, secretary-general of China Welfare Institute, said the institute has followed Soong Ching Ling's requirements and worked hard to promote after-school education. He said it intends to achieve even more in the future.
Gao Fuyuan, senior executive of Beijing Social Class for Primary and Secondary School Students, suggested that the foundation should use the experience of the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling in selecting outstanding primary school students to do voluntary work. He said that everyone should work to enlarge the influence of the event.
Zheng Zhixue, president of Beijing Huiwen First Primary School, proposed that the foundation should put more emphasis on raising teenagers' awareness of safeguarding China's territory and developing marine resources. Soong Ching Ling Science and Culture Center for Young People is expected to be a good learning platform.
Qian Tong, senior executive of Xinhua News Agency, suggested that to better carry out work concerning teenagers' development, the foundation should catch up with the times, meet the demands of teenagers and work to ensure their emotional wellbeing.
Li Xiuping, news anchor on China Central Television (CCTV), said that the foundation should carry out work in accordance with the national guidelines and in a manner appropriate to working with teenagers. It should focus on targeted poverty alleviation, the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the promotion of the cross-Straits relationship.
Ma Chengquan, former chairman of the Chinese Super League (CSL) Company, said that the firm has worked with the foundation for many years to promote football among teenagers. He expressed his hopes that they could put more emphasis on the sport's promotion in ethnic minority areas and facilitate international communication.
He Peilin, senior official of the National Government Offices Administration, said that the development of the internet and information technologies has greatly changed the lives of teenagers across the country. He argued that the foundation should promote the safe and appropriate use of the internet by Chinese teenagers.
